Little Amal Charms The Big Apple

by Stephen falla

Last weekend New York City welcomed Little Amal, a giant puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl that is the center of the interactive, traveling performance The Walk. In the company’s own words, Little Amal’s journey “is a celebration of migration and cultural diversity that tells the story of the contributions made by refugees and immigrants. It represents the refugee story as one of potential, success, respect, hospitality, and kindness.”

Each community within New York City has welcomed Little Amal with hand-crafted flowers, companion puppets, and song. It takes a team of four puppeteers to operate the twelve-foot carbon fiber puppet (created by Handspring Puppet Company) which will continue to walk through all five boroughs of New York City through October 2.
